Migguel Anggelo

Migguel Anggelo is a Brooklyn and Miami-based, transdisciplinary artist who uses music, physical theater, dance, text, and costume to create unique and highly personal representations of his queer, immigrant, and Venezuelan identities.

A boldly original artist, he speaks to today’s multi-lingual, multi-generational audiences by passionately expressing the same longings for safety, freedom, love, joy and belonging that we all share, regardless of sexual orientation and country of origin. Ultimately, he waves a plethora of artforms together to craft authenticity and heart. “with the showmanship of Desi Arnaz and the performance art of Klaus Nomi” (Theater Scene).

LatinXoxo

LatinXoxo is Migguel Anggelo’s truly personal reckoning: a break from "Latin Lover” clichés and his own Venezuelan father's gendered expectations. With indelible precision, weaving in and out of the audience, the artist connects past and present while unraveling the stereotypes that would otherwise constrain him. It is a queer, gender-bending artful mashup of theater, humor, physical movement, and sumptuous song selections — spanning decades of pop music, his own compositions, and the Spanish boleros of his youth. With equal doses of sensitivity and sensationalism, Migguel Anggelo reminds us that our own self-worth is right there in the mirror.

With a book by J. Julian Christopher and musical direction by Jaime Lozano, the production is directed by Adrian Alexander Alea. LatinXoxo will headline The Public Theater’s Under the Radar Festival and tour in arts centers nationwide thereafter.

English with an Accent

Conceived by Migguel Anggelo, English with an Accent is a hybrid, dance-theater production, narrated in a storytelling song-cycle backed by a company of ten dancers. An immigration tale told through the eyes of a newly arrived caterpillar in New York City fleeing the crime and noxious dictatorship of Venezuela, the work contains original music and lyrics by Migguel Anggelo and Jaime Lozano and is directed, choreographed, and developed by internationally acclaimed, Avihai Haham. The production made its premiere at the GALA Hispanic Theatre in Washington D.C. this past April, co-presented by Washington Performing Arts with additional tour dates to be announced.

JOY

For his new multidisciplinary project JOY, Migguel Anggelo dons the whimsical persona of JOY, a raisonneur inspired by the mime Marcel Marceu's immortal Bip the Clown, who asks us to consider the power of silence in new ways. With the addition of an all-star lineup of live musicians, JOY features original music by Migguel Anggelo and Michelle J. Rodriguez, both of whom also take the stage. The debut of Migguel Anggelo’s JOY, a work-in-progress, is directed, choreographed, and created in collaboration with award-winning artist Rosie Herrera, and made possible through developmental support from the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
